Introduction: Fr. Hattie was a missionary my grandmother supported while she was alive. Circle 7. When we would visit Grandma P, one of the first things we'd ask about was if she had any new letters from Fr. Hattie. Oh, how I wish someone had saved those. What a story they would tell. They were thin pieces of blue paper with his letter written on a manual typewriter (pre-computer days).
A few years ago, miraculously, I came across Fr. Hattie via one of those letters that comes seeking donations. He was still in Africa, in Uganda. And soon we were communicating again and I was carrying on the tradition of my Grandmother (but no Circle 7).
Initially, I would call my mom and read her the letter over the phone. Later I would send her a copy (hopefully she still has those) so she could show them to whomever (especially her grandchildren) visited her.
Time takes its toll and Fr. Hattie was retired to Nigeria and then brought back to the USA to a retirement community in Michigan and then back to Africa (Nairibi, Kenya). He is still typing out his letters but instead of blue paper, he is emailing them (they have gotten so thin there is no longer any paper!). Fr. Hattie passed away on Saturday June 12, 2021 at Karen Hospital in Nairobi. May his soul rest in the Peace of God.
